Where to plant

Where to plant

I personally prefer to plant indoors in my home, this way I have better overall control and since I maintain the temperature in my home at a comfortable level year round I don’t have to worry about large changes in temperature an important factor in plant health.

I live in southwest Florida and you might think that this is an area of the country that you can grow plants easily because of the weather but the truth is that it's way too hot in the summer to grow just about anything and in the winter months when we can plant outdoors you have to worry about bugs, fertilizing, watering and picking weeds only to get a less than ideal crop. Regardless of where you live, indoors is best if you wish to grow all year.

The most inexpensive hydroponics is one in which you don’t require artificial lighting, however no matter whether you plant indoors or out in a greenhouse you will have the challenge of controlling temperature and humidity. If you plant outdoors in winter you will need to heat your green house, this can be expensive and if you plant in summer especially in very warm climates you will need to cool down your environment. Regardless weather you plant indoors or out hydroponics is the same.

Because of the challenges of controlling temperature and humidity I prefer to plant certain crops indoors year round and since lighting prices have come down tremendously in the past couple of years it has made it reasonable to plant indoors. One ideal place to plant would be in a basement where the environment is usually cool and somewhat humid.

Whether you are using a green house, room or basement it is important that you have water and power nearby as well as the ability to easily drain your nutrient tank. (Nutrients should never be discarded into your house drain, apartment or storm drains) I will be discussing more on these topics later and showing you what to do to make your life easy.

By now you should have a good idea of what space you are going to use for your hydroponics. Step 1: pick place for your farm
